Your Visit: A Different Kind of Health Care
|
A visit with a naturopathic doctor (ND) is similar to one with a medical
doctor (MD), with a few exceptions:
ND's spend an average of 1 to 1-1/2 hours with each new patient* (versus
7-10 minutes in a typical HMO). Follow-up visits run 30-45 minutes.
*Constitutional homeopathy appointments run 2 hours for new patients.
Information gathered
ND's wiill ask about the history of your current illness, past medical history,
family history, and your current symptoms. In addition, an ND will want to
know about the foods you eat, the work you do, the stresses in your life, your
likes and dislikes, and your emotional background.
Treating the cause
Instead of simply giving you an herb or supplement to alleviate a symptom
such as a runny nose, an ND will work with you to find out what's causing you
to have the runny nose to begin with. By going after the root cause, treatment
can be specific, effective, and long-lasting.
Holistic care
ND's assess your symptoms as a whole, often finding they are interrelated.
When the cause of symptoms is treated, all of the symptoms improve.
Referrals
ND's are trained to refer patients who need further diagnostics and treatments
that are outside the scope of their training, and to recognize when this is
necessary.
